Project Based Learning Ideas for The Summer

by | Jun 29, 2017 | Project Based Learning

Summer is in full swing and you’re looking for ways to keep your kids active and learning. The best way to do that is by taking full advantage of project based learning activities. These activities are hands-on and give kids practical knowledge that will be valuable in and out of the classroom.

Check out these project based learning ideas you and your kids can do this summer:

Building Boats

Ready to tackle a project based learning challenge? Gather miscellaneous materials that kids can build boats out of. Then, fill a small container with water and challenge the kids to build a boat of the materials. The real challenge is keeping the boat afloat as you add pennies one at a time to the top of the boat. Students will enjoy the creativity of designing and building a boat. It’ll keep them entertained as they build and test their boats all the while they’ll be developing engineering and science skills.

Animal Research Reports

What kid doesn’t have a favorite animal? Whether your kids’ favorite animal is a cheetah or a horse, this project will keep them entertained for hours. Challenge them to learn as much about their animal choice as possible and then presenting the information in a presentation, brochure, or even poster format. Ask kids to answer these questions:

  • What does it look like?
  • What does it eat?
  • Where does it live?
  • Other facts?
  • Predators /Survival?
  • Babies?

Road Trip Research

If you’re planning a road trip for the summer, have your kids create a brochure for the trip. They can research the states you’ll be driving through, the destinations you plan on stopping at, and all of the sites they’ll see along the way. This project is all about developing research skills, learning about geography, and taking an interest in history. Kids can compile all of their research into a brochure to include:

  • A driving map
  • Destination information
  • State histories
  • Geographical information
