The next generation science standards are designed to improve science education through a three-dimensional learning process. These science content standards set expectations for what students should know and be able to do. The idea behind the next generation science standards was to help prepare students through research-based standards while giving educators the tools to design learning experiences that stimulate interests in science. Ultimately, the standards are designed to help students prepare for higher education and for future careers.
Science is a critical component of education and life. With a high-quality education, students will develop key skills in communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility. By developing these skills early on in students, educators can better prepare students for their future educational and professional lives.
1. Crosscutting Concepts:
One of the three dimensions of science learning in the next generation science standards is crosscutting concepts. Through this concept, students are able to explore all four domains of science: Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering Design. By combining the foundational concepts of all of these sciences, students develop a scientifically-based view of the world.
2. Science and Engineering Practices
The term practice implies investigating the natural world, examining designs, and building systems. By understanding these three concepts, students’ cognitive, social, and physical practice skills all increase. Plus, with the next generation science standards, students build, deepen, and apply their knowledge throughout the various domains of science.
3. Disciplinary Core Ideas
These are the main ideas in science that have a big impact in or across multiple science and engineering disciplines. Throughout their educational lives, students will see how these core ideas build on each other in the four science domains.
StratoStar Works With Next Generation Science Standards
At StratoStar, we understand just how important these standards are to every student’s success in and outside of the classroom. Our customized high-altitude weather balloon projects are designed to help students understand how the different science domains interact with each other. From designing experiments to analyzing the results of their balloon launch, StratoStar students are able to get hands on experience in STEM fields that will continue to have a major impact on their educational and career lives.
Are you ready to launch a high-altitude weather balloon with your students? With StratoStar’s help, you can get students out of their seats and excited about science and STEM!
